She was the only child of a single mom with five children, Jones had a difficult and a squatter's childhood. Her mother was constantly changing her location and she was a resident at the bottom of her home. A life of constant movement led Jones to switch to a new school every year until the time she entered high school. Jones moved away from her mother and moved to Theodore Roosevelt to enable her to concentrate on her track interest. Jones stayed in four houses during her highschool years in order to study at one location. Jones was awarded the Gatorade Iowa Track and Field Athlete of the Year Award in high school. She was involved in the school orchestra, as cellist. Jones started her professional career in the NCAA as one of the best hurdlers. She was the winner of the 100 meter hurdles at the 2002 NCAA Track & Field Championship. She was also a part of the team that placed 2nd in the 100 meters relay. Jones has been the NCAA champion in indoor hurdles both in 2003 and 2014. Jones began her track and field career in 2005 after she finished her university studies. She was the winner of both her events, the Torino Memorial and the Heusden Track races that same year.

Growing up in Cape Town South Africa Brandt relocated with her family Auckland New Zealand in her in her late teens. Brandt's talent was discovered in Auckland by local Director of casting Brandt.
